I visited the First Ray of Hope (FROH) charity orphanage in northern Kathmandu for one week in May 2016. At this time the orphanage was providing board, food and clothing, and access to education and medical facilities, for 16 beautiful children aged between 4 and 14 years. FROH also continues to offer and manage support for children that have moved on from the orphanage. Though coming from all different parts of Nepal, these children share one thing in common – a very difficult start to their lives. For whatever reason, these children had no future to look forward to. Some have lost both parents, some are from dysfunctional families and some from families too poor to care for them. FROH is a professionally run organisation providing these children with both physical and emotional support so that they will be skilled to lead a life of their choosing. These children will now have a life full of opportunities whereas before, they had none. You cannot put a monetary value on that.

"As a freelance documentary photographer from Canada, I was pleased to offer my photography service to First Ray of Hope Children's Home when I was contacted by the director, Rishi. During the afternoon I spent at the children's home, I was warmly welcomed and treated with kindness and respect by both Rishi and the staff members. I was glad to have the opportunity to spend the afternoon with the children engaged in activities of singing and spending time together. While I was only able to spend an afternoon with the children, I would be glad to return in the future in the capacity of offering volunteer or teaching service. I wish the best to the success of First Ray of Hope as they seek educational sponsorship for the children within the home."
